I'm Dan Cooperstock. Some people know me from Software4Nonprofits, the software business I founded in 2007, and for which I was the lead developer, until I sold it in 2022. Its products were the installed Windows programs DONATION, for tracking your donors and donations and issuing charitable tax receipts, and ACCOUNTS, for bookkeeping, including fund accounting. (I'd been giving DONATION away for free before that, since 1999, and had thousands of users when I turned it into a business.) I am still involved in Software4Nonprofits in a very small way. Its main product is now a new web application, DONATION Online.
I love programming, and I do the Sudoku puzzle in the newspaper every morning, so for fun I wrote a Sudoku playing and solving program in PowerBuilder, the powerful programming environment with which I wrote the original Software4Nonprofits applications. Having done that, to have more fun programming I rewrote (or used AI to translate) that application in several other programming languages. Downloads of working programs, and access to the source code, is provided on the Sudoku page on this site.
I am involved in 3 more-or-less spiritual or church communities:
West Hill United Church is a values-based church in Scarborough Ontario. We are theologically barrier-free. That means we don't talk about God, or anything supernatural, or read scripture, so you can come and enjoy it whether or not you have any religious or spiritual beliefs.
We do a wonderful job of hybrid services - often more than half of those attending on a Sunday morning (at 10:30am Eastern time) come online via Zoom, and they can participate very fully. I'm the Finance Chair for West Hill.
Rabbi Brian Zachary Mayer's Religion Outside the Box (ROTB). Rabbi Brian is the author of the amazing book "Rabbi Brian's Highly Unorthodox Gospel", which is one of the best spiritual books I have read for a very long time. It mixes stories from his life (often with a lot of humour) with his learnings and teachings. It's available from the ROTB website or Amazon.
Rabbi Brian runs online-only Saturday morning services on Zoom, also largely values-based, though God might come up - but atheists are welcome. I love them, as they are extremely participatory. He describes his approach as spiritualigious (his word, used to avoid too many past meanings from "religion" or "spirituality").
Toronto Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). Having grown up agnostic Jewish, Quakers were the first religious organization I joined, having found them during a year of study in Oxford England in 1978-79. I joined the meeting in 1981, and became very active at the local, national and international levels for many years. Around 2016 I found that for whatever reason, Quaker worship, which is based in silence, was no longer working for me - I was sitting there thinking of my work or just being bored. For several years I was active in the secular community group Toronto Oasis, then in 2023 moved on to West Hill United. I still attend Toronto Monthly Meeting's Monthly Meeting for Worship regularly.
